If the pump begins to leak or it is due a service it is common practice to replace the mechanical seal.
Mechanical seals usually last for several years but this does of course depend on the working conditions and numbers of hours being worked by the pump.

Many boat, ship and yacht owners have a reoccurring problem with leaking gland housings and worn out shaft impellors.
The following is a case study of a recent enquiry and subsequent application for some stern gland packing.
The enquiry came in to Acumen Seals of Manchester England early 2008; from a boat owner and was for some gland packing for the impellor shaft. The packing needed ‘natural’ lubrication properties that would reduce shaft wear and leakage.
The boat owner is a valued member of the Cruising Association which has some 1500 members world wide and most of whom have the same problem with the gland housing on the shaft impellor.
Aqualisa, Salamander, Stuart Turner, Monsoon, Jacuzzi, Bristan, Triton, Watermill are all leading shower pump manufacturers.
Some of them offer consumers up to five years warranty, but what do you do if the unit breaks after this period? Usually if the pump begins to leak the majority of the time it will be down to the mechanical seal unit inside.
The mechanical seal is a device which sits onto the shaft within the housing and works by trapping a microscopic thin layer of water between its faces. When the rotary element rotates with the shaft it then creates a seal against the stationary part.
Acumen Seals of Manchester, England have secured an exclusive UK distributor agreement with Europe’s fastest growing mechanical seal manufacturer Fluiten Seals.
Fluiten are based in Milan, Italy and have been manufacturing cartridge seals and carrying out industrial projects since 1962. Fluiten are engaged in the complete range of industries from mixing and agitator applications to petrochemical/chemical projects. They also offer highly innovative and competitive seals for petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food & drink, energy, paper and naval.
A mechanical seal can either wear out, or fail. To determine which one your seals are doing, look at the wearable face. In most instances this will be the face manufactured from some grade of carbon/ graphite.
Since the seal face is the only sacrificial part of the mechanical seal, a worn out seal is identified as one that has no carbon nose piece left at the time it started to leak. A failed seal is identified by the fact that it has substantial carbon remaining at the time it started to leak.
