Bead Mill Mechanical Seals

Posted on October 29th, 2009 by lol in Case Study, Mechanical Seals

Bead Mills are specially designed equipment that reduce particles to sub micron size. The main component of a bead mill is a cylindrical vessel that contains a motor-driven central shaft, which is equipped with impellers of different types.

This article details the bead mill mechanical seal issues and what imporvements can be made to decrease pump downtime and loss of fluid.

A horizontal bead mill comes with an enclosed vessel. While operating this bead mill, enclosed vessel is filled with grinding media, agitator shaft activates media, creating shearing and strong forces. Rotation of agitator imparts energy to surrounding media.

Forces then either fracture, tear, or crush particulate. Horizontal bead mill can be operated continuously since it is equipped with devices, which retain the beads within the milling chamber. Then the final product of these bead mill is evenly dispersed in liquid.

Mechanical Seals For Bead Mill Equipment

A leading UK mechanical seals Company called Acumen Seals Ltd have developed over 5 years a new double balanced cartridge seal designed especially for the Eiger mark  2  (20 litre and 40 litre)  Horizontal bead mills.

Andrew Sykes, the sales director for Acumen stated “ We found through listening to engineers that the ,the old seal design was always and still is critical manual operation which is very difficult and time consuming . Single seals in double seal arrangements are fraught with problems. Correct working length must be adhered too.

The dimensions must be derived from technical data sheets supplied with the original seal manufacture, sometimes very hard to find designer of the seal or especially any technical data. Expensive sleeve replacement is necessary this must be looked at with component seals.”

He continued by stating “These days, when costs and cost cutting are discussed at every meeting, the costs relating to the installation of component seals must be analysed and addressed.

The Acumen cartridge seals are proved and tested in this application to last between two and four years before the need to recondition.”

The Benefits Of Switching To This Innovative Design

The specially designed double pressure balanced cartridge seals have the following benefits:

  1. Reduce fitting time
  2. No sleeve wear
  3. High technology pressure balanced seal
  4. No need for expensive replacement of component seals.

With the seal being a cartridge seal Acumen seals can offer a spares repair service. This saves on purchasing  new  mechanical seals every time the seal fails.

A simple step by step procedure to fit the seals:

1. Make sure shaft run out does not exceed 0.01mm per 10mm of shaft diameter

2.Shaft tolerance o/d should not exceed +0 – 0.5mm

3.Check axial movement tolerance of the shaft. It should not exceed 0.13mm

4. Clean all relevant components before fitting, re tap various holes on machine for ease of installation, check all key ways are burr free.

5. Grease shaft soapy liquid, grease internal O rings of Acumen cartridge seal
