Bead Mills are specially designed equipment that reduce particles to sub micron size. The main component of a bead mill is a cylindrical vessel that contains a motor-driven central shaft, which is equipped with impellers of different types.
This article details the bead mill mechanical seal issues and what imporvements can be made to decrease pump downtime and loss of fluid.

A horizontal bead mill comes with an enclosed vessel. While operating this bead mill, enclosed vessel is filled with grinding media, agitator shaft activates media, creating shearing and strong forces. Rotation of agitator imparts energy to surrounding media.
The mechanical seals to suit Giusti Pumps and Mixers are mechanical devices that prevent product leakage. Mechanical seals stop product leakage by trapping a microscopic layer of liquid between the two faces opposing. These faces are usually lapped up to 2 lightbands or 0.00058mm of flatness. Many boat, ship and yacht owners have a reoccurring problem with leaking gland housings and worn out shaft impellors.
The following is a case study of a recent enquiry and subsequent application for some stern gland packing.
The enquiry came in to Acumen Seals of Manchester England early 2008; from a boat owner and was for some gland packing for the impellor shaft. The packing needed ‘natural’ lubrication properties that would reduce shaft wear and leakage.
The boat owner is a valued member of the Cruising Association which has some 1500 members world wide and most of whom have the same problem with the gland housing on the shaft impellor.
